Did I exist before I was born?
Q:
Did our spirits live before we were born, or did life begin when we were born? If there is life after death, shouldn't there be life before birth? Did God make us, or did our parents?
A:
When you were born, you came into this world created by God, who made you using the DNA from your parents. You are uniquely you. You were born with a body, a soul (your mind, will and emotions) and a spirit. Unfortunately your spirit was dead (like a dead battery, needing a charge). You did not exist before you were created. Now whether or not that creation was instantaneous at conception (when egg met sperm) or a non-instantaneous process in your mother's womb, is the subject of considerable debate. But know that God has a unique purpose in creating you. And what God begins, only he can end. You (body, soul, spirit) live until he decides otherwise. When your body dies, your soul and spirit continue in a manner he determines. Consider what Jesus said:
"In the same way that Moses lifted the serpent in the desert so people could have something to see and then believe, it is necessary for the Son of Man to be lifted up-- and everyone who looks up to him, trusting and expectant, will gain a real life, eternal life. This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life." (The Message, John 3:14-16)
Something more to consider:
You and I live our lives in "time." Our lives are lived like points along a timeline, with beginning, middle and end in a sequence.
God does not operate constrained by "time." He sees beginning, middle and end all at once. He knew of you before you were born. He planned that all your tresspasses could be dealt with by Jesus on the cross. He knows whether or not you will choose to make Jesus your savior and "boss" or not. He doesn't take away your free will to choose--but he sees all your choices before you make them.
This is confusing to our "linear" minds. But true. Think about it.
