Do You Ever Feel Like You're Being Sifted Like Wheat?
On the night he was betrayed, Jesus made this remarkable statement to Simon Peter in the Upper Room (Luke 22: 31-32): "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."
Sifted like wheat. This was the practice of separating the chaff from the wheat by striking it and then tossing it into the air. The heavier wheat fell back, while the lighter chaff was blown away.
Apparently Satan asked God for permission to separate the disciples from Jesus like chaff from wheat. Jesus' intervention saved them.
We see some remarkable things here:
- Satan had to ask permission to attack Jesus' disciples.
- Jesus knew what Satan asked for.
- Satan was granted permission, but Jesus' prayer restricted him and strengthened them.
- The critical item was that their faith might not fail.
Did you know that Satan wants to sift you like wheat, too? His plan is to separate you from faith in Jesus. And it might seem like he sometimes succeeds. But Jesus is still defending us. Still intervening for us. Still praying so our faith will not fail.
In Romans 8 the Apostle Paul reminds us, "Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? ... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Do you feel sifted like wheat? Are the events around you causing you fear and dispair? Do you feel abandoned and helpless? Is your life out of control?
Don't be afraid. Jesus is interceding for you. His Holy Spirit is ready to comfort and lead you. Don't lose faith. Hang on to the knowledge that Jesus loves you. Maybe you don't know how to solve your problems, but Jesus does. Talk with him. Listen to what the Spirit says to you. Fill your mind with his holy Scripture. Trust him.
As we draw close to Jesus, our fears fade. Our patience and endurance increase. Our confidence in him grows.
So hold out your hand to Jesus in prayer. Trust him. He is trustworthy to lead you on.
